January 2018 highlights

January always produces plenty of records and there was certainly a good range of species to be looked for this year. Many observers headed for Darley Dale or Allestree Park in search of the Hawfinch influx but Drakelow NR was also very popular with the long-staying Long-Tailed Duck and a Hooded Merganser (it's ringed!) which was found on 1st. Another obvious attraction was the mix of egrets along the Trent Valley and which finally produced the perfect trio when 2 Cattle Egrets, a Great White Egret and 8 Little Egrets could be seen together.

The wintering Great Northern Diver at Carsington Water was still available for year lists but it was a great shame that two other unidentified divers only overflew the site, rather than settling. The gull-watchers turned up an impressive 11 species, which included all three "white-winged targets"", whilst there was an equally broad mix of wildfowl and waders. The latter included 5 Ruff at Carsington Water and Green Sandpipers, a Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper as further proof that more of these species are choosing to winter with us.

Both Common Crossbills and Parrot Crossbills remained in Upper Derwentdale and two early Woodlarks flew over Willington GP to be expertly identified by Richard James.

Amongst resident birds, Carsington Water reported a site record count of 17 Raven, Barn Owl reports from 15 locations must be encouraging news and there were some excellent counts of common species. Add in a steady passage of Pink-footed Geese, a few Whooper Swans and two Marsh Harriers and it all offered plenty of compensation for the paucity of Bramblings and the first winter for a long while without a Great Grey Shrike.
