December 2012 highlights

Top of the list this month has to be the extraordinary number of Waxwings and had all sightings been listed then they would have filled the space allocated for the entire Bird Notes. They clearly thrilled many people!

The Slavonian Grebe stayed on until mid-month and the Great Northern Diver all month, whilst Bitterns were present at several sites and at least four Whooper Swans toured the Trent Valley. A Brent Goose was a good find and a Velvet Scoter proved to be very popular, particularly as it stayed on into 2013 and caused a number of birders to make their first visit to Steetley Quarry.

Wildfowl numbers did finally increase a little and gull roosts also grew, although ‘white-winged’ gulls were very scarce. There was a further passage of Pink-footed Geese and a worthwhile mix of late waders but without the latter throwing up anything unexpected.

Whilst occasionally elusive, a Great Grey Shrike was present all month, one Common Redpoll was found, just a few more Bramblings arrived and wintering Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs were discovered.

The Velvet Scoter certainly deserved the attention that it got, but for many it was all about the Waxwings. Every best wish to you all for lots of great birds in 2013.
