December 2013 highlights

An interesting mix of species this month even if numbers were lower than usual in some cases. More Great Northern Divers appeared, our first Bittern of the winter was seen at Willington GP and a Great White Egret was an excellent find amongst the growing number of Little Egrets.

Wildfowl counts were well off peak although Scaup and Common Scoter were again recorded. Waders, apart from the larger plovers, were harder to find as water levels rose but most regular gulls species were reported as well as a couple of Kittiwakes.

The discovery of a Lesser Whitethroat gave us four species of warbler, something which would barely have been imaginable a few years back, whilst there was much early song reported and even some nest building and refurbishment.

Winter thrushes increased in numbers but the more impressive counts came in the finch species, particularly Brambling and Linnet. Common Crossbills and Hawfinch pleased those who could find them but a high altitude Snow Bunting was seen by just one observer.
