December 2015 highlights

A month of wet but mild weather produced a slightly different mix of species from the average December and there were many reports of birds in song.

More Great Northern Divers arrived, although sadly one was to be found dead, a few more Pink-footed Geese moved across the county and there was an interesting influx of Shag. Several of the latter were still present into the New Year.

A female Ring-necked Duck was an excellent find, a Brent Goose of unknown origin appeared briefly and the first Smew of the winter appeared at a regular site. Other wildfowl numbers built up slowly, although the weather may also have been responsible for lower totals than normal.

There was the usual welcome mix of waders and gulls with the latter including our first Glaucous Gull of the second winter period. Short-eared Owls always delight and several were available to those who made the effort to see them. Two Ring-necked Parakeets in the north-east were probably from the small Yorkshire population.

Willington GP provided the opportunity to see Water Pipit whilst the Starling roost at Middleton Moor grew in numbers and seems likely to draw crowds as it has in the past.
