Dec 2017 highlights

Plenty of records again this month, partly due to the pleasure experienced by so many of us following the discovery of more Hawfinch. In recent years, the final months have produced outstanding finds (think Crag Martin and Dusky Thrush!) and this time it was a party of Parrot Crossbills. The first since the 1980’s and also very popular, attracting many admirers.

Two Black-necked Grebes appeared briefly, we now expect at least one Great White Egret record each month and the passage of Pink-footed Geese continued, albeit that some of these seemed to be already heading back west. A good mix of wildfowl included the return of the Long-tailed Duck to Drakelow NR and the arrival of Smew at Aston on Trent GP.

Amongst the waders it was good to see some healthy counts of Lapwing whilst wintering Greenshank, Green Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper are always good finds, as are small warblers such as the Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps that were reported. The expected mix of gulls included sightings of Glaucous Gull.

A few Twite meant that we have had records in every month this year and it was encouraging to hear about a roost of 200 Greenfinch since this species has been troubled by infections and has disappeared from many gardens.
