Bird News July 2013

This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

May 2013 highlights

The feature of May has been the late arrival of many incoming migrants and passage birds, together with the delayed departure of outgoing migrants. As mentioned last month, this caused some of the latter to commence singing. Whilst wintering Great Northern Divers and Waxwings will often stay into May, it is less usual to record species such as Goldeneye and Brambling as has happened this year.

County rarities came in the form of Great White Egret, Stone Curlew and Hoopoe whilst the Wood Sandpiper and Garganey would also have been popular had they stayed a little longer.

There were plenty of Red Kites, a few more Ospreys and a couple of Marsh Harriers whilst the mix of gulls and terns included Mediterranean Gull, Little Gulls, Kittiwake, Little Terns and Black Terns.

Mid-month saw an impressive number of waders which included notable counts of Whimbrel, Dunlin, Sanderling and a county record-count of Turnstone.
