This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

April 2017 highlights
Long staying birds included both the Great Northern Diver and Long-tailed Duck with both progressing to almost full summer plumage. As expected, many of the Waxwings were also still with us, as it was too early for them to move as far northwards as they will need to go.
Large white birds are always interesting so a suite of Great White Egret, Cattle Egret, Spoonbill and an escaped White Stork proved very popular with those who could get to them in time.
Wildfowl numbers were well down but interest remained in Garganey and visits from Scaup and Common Scoters. There were an impressive 22 species of wader of which ten Sanderling together was particularly noteworthy. Gull roosts were largely over but weather conditions at the end of the month saw arrivals of Arctic, Black and Little Terns as well as the expected Common Terns. Many of the latter will stay with us for the next few months.
Raptors included many opportunities to see Osprey and Red Kite plus the return of Hobby for their summer breeding cycle.
Two excellent finds were a Hoopoe and a Bearded Tit although neither stayed long enough to be enjoyed by too many observers. Our colour-ringed Twite total progresses well, the number of locations that boasted Cettiās Warbler increased yet again, migrant chats and warblers came in good numbers and there were once again some excellent counts of species that are too easy to take for granted. All in all, quite a month
