January 2016 highlights

The Great Northern Divers at Carsington Water peaked at four in mid-month, several of the Shag remained from last month, a few Whooper Swans were found and there were plenty of reports of Pink-footed Geese heading back to the north-west.

The list shows an excellent mix of wildfowl whilst, apart from a shortage of white-winged gulls, the gull enthusiasts had plenty to identify and enjoy. Returning waders included Oystercatchers and Curlews plus unseasonable birds in the form of Ringed Plover and Ruff.

There were some impressive roost counts, involving Starling and Pied Wagtail in particular, whilst Siskin seemed to be everywhere. The find of the month, however, was surely the four high altitude Snow Buntings found feeding in snow. That must have been quite a sight.

On the debit side, only one Red Kite was reported, Great Grey Shrikes proved very elusive, there were very few Bramblings and no Waxwings at all.
