February 2017 highlights

A good start to the month with notable species such as Great Northern Diver, Bittern, Great White Egret and the Waxwings all remaining with us. A Tundra Bean Goose was then an excellent record albeit that we had to wait for it to wander over the border from Notts. Later in the month, a Black Redstart was another reward for diligent patchwork.

A few Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese were still passing through and although wildfowl numbers began to decrease, sea-ducks could still be found in the form of Scaup, Common Scoter and a Long-Tailed Duck.

Waders included the first Ringed Plovers of the year, returning Curlew, some obliging Jack Snipe and healthy counts of Common Snipe. Eleven species of gull is always a good monthly total and included all of the species that might be hoped for at this time of year.

Yet another new site for the expanding population of Cetti’s Warbler and some impressive counts of commoner species such as Wren, Dunnock and Robin all added up to an excellent February
