April 2015 highlights

As is often the case, April saw a large increase in records as the main influx of migrants arrived at a time when many wintering species were still with us. The Great Northern Diver neared full summer plumage as was the case with a Black-necked Grebe which pleased many.

Wildfowl numbers reduced quite rapidly as the month progressed but the variety was maintained by the presence of Garganey, a few Common Scoter and for one lucky observer, a Long-tailed Duck. There was a good showing of Red Kites and a welcome passage of Ospreys. Surely, some of these will soon stay and take advantage of the nest platforms provided.

A most impressive list of waders included an Avocet and the mix of gull species still included Caspian Gull, Iceland Gull and Kittiwake. The surprise in that category, however, was the Little Gull that arrived in mid-month but stayed into May.

Rarer species included possible sightings of Rough-legged Buzzard, Hoopoe and Hooded Crow whilst a Spotted Crake sang but did not reveal itself.

There was a splendid arrival/passage of Ring Ouzel, which included one spectacular flock, and a welcome sighting of a single Corn Bunting. Sadly, the latter is all too rare nowadays.
