October highlights

A month notable for the incoming and outgoing migrations, with a number of species staying later than usual. More birders appear to be participating in visible migration watches and the notes show some of the impressive results.

The most popular bird of the month was probably the Grey Phalarope at Carsington Water, although it could be elusive at times. Sightings of Great White Egret were once equally rare, but now that the species has bred in the UK we may hopefully see more, as happened this month.

There was another excellent passage of Pink-footed Geese although the Brent Goose that turned up was less expected. The mix of raptors, waders and gulls was also impressive and although overall wildfowl numbers were well down on recent years, they did include species such as Scaup and Common Scoter.

A Slavonian Grebe stayed for just a day and Gannet and a Water Pipit were also all too brief. The return of Great Grey Shrike and Brambling are always welcomed and the migratory movements produced enough extra species to create an excellent month total.
