October 2013 highlights

A quite extraordinary month in many ways. Whilst some of our keenest birders were watching the sea from as far apart as Shetland and Scilly, Derbyshire was playing host to Gannet, Great Skua, Arctic Skua, Little Gull and Snow Bunting with a full supporting cast of wintering species such as Whooper Swan, (Tundra) Bean Goose, Brent Goose and Common Scoter. Pretty good when you can’t get much further inland than our county!

All of this linked with a near-record count of Mandarin Duck, a well-found Green-winged Teal and only our third-ever Bluethroat; the latter sadly dead when discovered.

There was the usual healthy mix of raptors, waders and gulls and the initial reports from the now regular visible migration watches. To swell the month list, some species such as Whinchat and Lesser Whitethroat put in unusually late appearances.
