This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

October 2014 highlights

This month’s list reveals a lot and not least, the increasing popularity of visible migration watches. Some of the figures for species such as Wood Pigeon and winter thrushes are impressive as are the counts for other species made by the same dedicated observers.

Amongst the rarer birds, Black-necked Grebe and Pectoral Sandpiper remained from last month, and a Velvet Scoter appeared briefly, but the highlight was surely the dozen Bearded Tits that visited Ogston Res and created a county record in the process. Of even greater interest would have been the late Swift species, which passed through the same site, had it been proved to be a Pallid Swift as was thought.

Winter seemed closer with the arrival of Whooper Swans, a good passage of Pink-footed Geese and the arrival of a Great Northern Diver and Great Grey Shrikes. Wildfowl numbers also built up, there were a few late terns and Great Skuas appeared at Carsington and Ogston.

Rough-legged Buzzards can frequently present identification problems but, in line with a national passage, it is now certain that several did pass through the county.
