September 2011 Bird News
This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

August highlights
Although August produced a smaller number of records, as is often the case with so many members on holiday, there was an impressive list of species. Two Black-necked Grebe were good finds, half-a-dozen Marsh Harrier records perhaps shows how well this species is doing nationally and more than 40 reports of Little Egret must support the view that our first breeding record may not be too far away.
Much pleasure must have come from a splendid suite of waders. This included Little Stint, Spotted Redshank and Wood Sandpiper as well as good numbers of more regular visitors such as Greenshank and Green Sandpiper. Ogstonās Black Terns were also very popular by being available over several days.
The end of summer was signalled by returning wildfowl, the build up of gull roosts and the dispersal of many breeding species. It may prove a good winter for Common Crossbill and there is always the possibility of finding another Crossbill species amongst them.
