August 2018 highlights

August can often throw up surprises, as migrants move through, and this year was no exception. Sadly, Black-necked Grebe, Spoonbills and a Honey Buzzard made only very brief appearances although a Ring-necked Duck did stay longer.

Great White Egrets are now recorded in most months but the really big news was confirmation that Little Egrets have bred in the county for the first time ever. There were also welcome reports of more progress for breeding Nightjars and Twite.

Winter wildfowl started to return, gull roosts began to form and an impressive list of 21 wader species included a Temminck's Stint and a Curlew Sandpiper.

Other passage birds included Garganey, Marsh Harriers and Ospreys, with some good counts of commoner species, and a report of 31 Raven together was quite exceptional.

Finally, many thanks to all who have participated in the Swift monitoring project. With all but stragglers now departed, the collation process can be completed.
